Reading and Writing Enrichment Activities Enrichment Grab a Great Book! Our hope is that our students will develop a life-long love of reading. Keeping that in mind, this year's summer reading assignment allows students to choose what to read, a luxury they do not often have during the year. We have provided a link (look under "My Links" on the left-hand side of this page) to highly recommended and comprehensive booklists as a starting point only; we encourage students to browse book stores and Rogers Memorial Library. Once you have read your book, you are to pick an assignment to complete from the choices below. This year we are still offering you the chance to complete the assignment over the summer, and it will count as part of first quarter. However, if you choose not to complete this assignment over the summer, you may still complete the assignment after school starts. There will be one due date per quarter, and the assignment will count as extra credit for your English class. You have the option of completing one extra credit assignment per quarter. Reading and Writing Assignment Choices 1. Book Group Choose a book to read and set up a book group. Your book group should have at least three students in it. Set up a schedule for your book group including dates and times, and write up a summary of what you discussed at each meeting. Your group should meet at least three times, and a book review should be submitted at the end. This book review will be submitted to the Journalism teacher for possible publication in the school newspaper. 2. Book Review Write a review of the book you have read. This book review should include the cover of your book, a brief paragraph describing the plot of the book, a paragraph discussing at least two of the literary elements and techniques the author utilized, and a final paragraph including your opinion of the book and why you would recommend it. 3. Book Talk Read your book and make a poster highlighting the cover and some of the best parts of the book. Arrange a class period with your teacher and present the book to your class. Talk about the book, read two passages from the book, and share your opinion of the book with the class. A written review including analysis of the two passages should be handed in along with your poster. 4. Character Superlative Nominate one of the characters in your book for a Senior Superlative. Which Senior Superlative would you give him/her? Explain why in a detailed essay of five paragraphs. Include quotes from the book which are clear examples of the character's traits. 5. Choice You may choose to complete another writing assignment. Talk to your English teacher and have your project idea approved before you work on it. Due Dates Summer/First Quarter- October 13 Second Quarter- December 15 Third Quarter-March 7 Fourth Quarter- May 10
*Please note that the assignment for the 12 AP Literature and Composition students is listed on the left side of this page as a separate link. Please email Mr. Vincent Zangrillo at vzangrillo@southamptonschools.org if you have any questions about the 12 AP assignment.
